Give her a big hand

9 September 2010 by Laura

Introducing the talented Cornelia Baltes, one of the 45 artists shortlisted for the ‘John Moores Painting Prize‘.

Artist with her work at press call

Cornelia Baltes poses for photographs with her work ‘THERE YOU ARE!’

The photograph above was taken at a press call yesterday, when Cornelia painted the black outline of the hand straight onto the walls of the Walker Art Gallery.

‘THERE YOU ARE!’ is an abstract painting on canvas accompanied by the giant hand pointing down towards it.

Cornelia had a practice run before she was brave enough to put paint to wall, but once she was ready the hand appeared in just a few brush strokes.

Currently studying at the Slade School of Fine Art, Cornelia’s tutor is none other than Lisa Milroy, John Moores first prizewinner in 1989.

The winner of this year’s ‘John Moores Painting Prize’will be revealed live online on 16 September from 18.30.

The exhibition opens to the public from 18 September to 3 January 2011.
