Ken Dodd tickling Stephen with a tickling stick

Fundraising and membership officer Sarah Houghton has news of a special event that was held for our members yesterday:

“Members enjoyed a really tattyfilarious event last night at the Museum of Liverpool. It was an evening which tantalised members with a fascinating insight into ‘The King of Knotty Ash’- Ken Dodd, to accompany the great new exhibition By Jove! It’s Ken Dodd! Photographs by Stephen Shakeshaft.

The evening got off to a great start with the usual complimentary drink in the café. This gave everyone a chance to relax and mingle before heading into the theatre for the special ‘in conversation’ event between the photographer Stephen Shakeshaft and exhibition curator, Paul Gallagher.

In a hilarious and touching insight, Stephen talked about his experiences of Ken, the man behind the tickling stick and Dicky Mint. He made us all laugh when he told us about the giant rubber cow he came across in Ken’s dressing room (which turned out to be part of the stage props of course!!) It was really interesting to hear first hand what working with such a well known comedy legend is like, and everyone had lots of questions and comments afterwards.

Following the in-conversation (which could have gone on for hours, much like one of Ken Dodd’s famous stage shows!) there was time for members to have a look round the exhibition. This rare opportunity to explore after the Museum had closed to the public topped off a really interesting and enjoyable evening.

This was just one of a number of special events that take place in all of our venues throughout the year exclusively for our members. For more information on the membership scheme and the other benefits you could receive, see the membership page on the website or email our Membership Officer on membership@liverpoolmuseums.org.uk

Tatty bye!”
