Liverpool Irish Festival Day at the Museum of Liverpool on Saturday 25 October

We’re joining with Liverpool Irish Festival tomorrow for a fantastic programme of events to celebrate Irish history and culture in the city. Here, Greg Quiery who is part of the Festival tells us about his interest in Liverpool’s Irish links, and also what you can expect from the day:

“Ever since I came to Liverpool from Belfast in the distant seventies, I have been interested in the story of the Irish community here. Not just the story of their migration from Ireland, but in how they linked with others to build the unique Liverpool identity.

In the days when we were commemorating the Irish Great Hunger, we had links with the old Museum of Liverpool Life. In recent years the Museum of Liverpool has been a great friend of the Irish Festival. It has welcomed musicians, dancers, singers and performers from the Irish community.

What I like about the Festival day at the Museum is  that people have such a variety to choose from: they can go for the entertainments or attend the activity workshops or they can choose to dig more deeply into the material the Museum contains. The Irish Trail, which I developed along with Curator Paul Gallagher, demonstrates that the Museum is the repository of many of the individual stories which together reveal the history of the Irish impact on Merseyside. That’s not to say there’s not more to be done. I am sure this connection has much to offer the people of Merseyside in the coming years.

This year’s Irish Festival Day at the Museum of Liverpool on Saturday 25 October, includes a packed programme of events featuring music, history, art, film and entertainment. There is something for all the family – children’s drawing workshops, a session with children’s writer, Malachy Doyle, and music throughout the day.

Don’t miss the guided tours of the Irish aspects of the Museum. And if you stop a little longer you catch the launch of a new short film ‘Saint of the Slums’ about the life of Kitty Wilkinson.

If history is your thing, don’t forget the Liverpool Irish heritage walks on Saturday and Sunday and the Irish Heritage coach tour on Sunday 2 November. To book, text 07854415721.”
