On Saturday 5 November we bid a fond farewell to Coming Out: Sexuality, Gender and Identity, our groundbreaking exhibition featuring artworks by David Hockney, Steve McQueen, Anya Gallaccio and Sarah Lucas among many others.
The artists represented have used their work to explore sexuality and gender identity since 1967, after the passing of the Sexual Offences Act, which marked the partial decriminalisation of male homosexual acts in England and Wales.
The exhibition has been enjoyed by almost 60,000 visitors to date, and we’ve received some wonderful comments on the show:
“Coming Out is transformative in its approach, challenging how curators employ institutions, rewriting previous narratives, giving recognition to what maybe lost historically.” – ID magazine
“Coming Out is a landmark exhibition in terms of depth and breadth on LGBT contemporary art, drawn from the Walker’s own collection and the Arts Council Collection.” – Wallpaper magazine
“Coming Out is an important step in the recognition of queer cultural history and its impact on society.” – Bido Lito magazine
We plan to celebrate the closing of the exhibition with a number of special events. On Friday 3 November, we have a free LGBT+ study day, from 10am – 4.30pm.
There will be the opportunity to hear from artists, activists and community leaders about their work. The day will also include a panel discussion reflecting on where we go next and what the future holds for LGBT+ representation and visibility in museums and galleries.
On Saturday 4 November, join us for free events including tarot readings, a curator-led exhibition tour and manicures from trans activist (and recent Marie Claire Future Shapers winner!) Charlie Craggs.
Saturday is also the opening day of a new display at the Gallery, Making Himself Claire: Grayson Perry’s Dresses, a not-to-be-missed display of 12 dresses belonging to the artist.
Coming Out will soon travel to Birmingham Art Gallery where it can be seen from 2 December 2017 to 15 April 2018.
